ROXAND TOWNSHIP, MI – A 17-year-old young man is dead today after an apparent altercation with an Eaton County Sheriff’s Sergeant resulted in the officer firing upon the teenager, killing him.
Deven Guilford, 17-years-old, of Mulliken, was pulled over by the officer on M-43 near Cochran and Guilford around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 28th, 2015. Officials have stated that the traffic stop was routine.
It is unclear what sparked the altercation between the Sergeant and the teenager.
The area where the shooting took place is a few miles west of Grand Ledge.
The sergeant suffered “significant” injuries and was taken to Sparrow Hospital, state police said in a news release.
It has been learned that Guilford was into Mixed Martial Arts. Seven months ago he posted to Instagram ‘MMA killed me tonight‘. In another post 6 months ago he said that he thought he was going to get pulled over.
The officer who was involved in the incident has not been identified. They are still undergoing medical care. The officer has been placed on administrative leave.
M-43 was closed for approximately 5 hours for the initial investigation into the traffic stop and shooting. It reopened around 1:30am Sunday morning.
Deven Lee Guilford
Deven, 17-years-old, of Mulliken, passed away February 28th, 2015 in Roxand Township. He was born March 22nd, 1997 in Lansing, was a junior at Grand Ledge High School and a member of The Liberty Church in Grand Ledge.
Surviving are his parents, Brian and Becky Guilford; brothers, Ryan (Michelle) Guilford and Aaron (Maryam) Guilford; girl friend, Brittany Patterson; best friends, Caden Evert and Andrew Alpers; nieces and nephews, Austin, Brendin, Annabelle and Asher Guilford; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services 11 A.M. Thursday at The Liberty Church with Rev. James K. Roberts officiating. Interment will be in Meadowbrook Cemetery, Mulliken.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Wednesday at Barker-Leik Funeral Home, Mulliken.
