Kent County Crash Kills 17 yr old Byron Center High School Girl

BYRON TOWNSHIP, MI – A single vehicle accident took the life of a Byron Center High School student on Friday, March 13th, 2015.Fatal Crash

The accident happened around 6:30 p.m. on Wilson Avenue SW near 92nd Avenue.  Officers said the driver of the vehicle lost control while traveling south on Wilson in a 2002 Kia Rio.  The vehicle left the road and struck a tree.

The driver, Victoria Garraus, 17-years-old, was pronounced dead at the scene.  Her passenger, Cayla Dyer, 18-years-old, received only minor injuries.  She was transport to the hospital, treated and released.

Scott Joseph, principal of Byron Center High School, released the following statement:

Dear Students,

It is with great sadness that I bring to you news of losing one of our Byron Center High School students. Victoria Garraus, senior, passed away tonight as she lost control of her car on Wilson and 92nd street. Passenger Cayla Dyer, also a senior, was treated at the hospital and released with minor injuries. Victoria was a part of the Artist Community and an active member in various areas of the arts at BCHS.

The families of Cayla and Victoria ask that we keep them in our thoughts and prayers, but to allow them time and space to mourn and work through this tragedy.

On Monday, counselors will be available to work through supporting any of you who need support through this loss.

Thank you for your compassion and supporting all those hurting during this time.

Byron Center High School is making grief counseling available to students.

Authorities said alcohol was not a contributing factor, and both teens were wearing their seat belts.
