SANILAC COUNTY, MI – On July 21st, 2015 at approximately 12:45 p.m., Sanilac Central Dispatch received a 9-1-1 call from a cell phone with screaming in the background.
Dispatchers were able to track the owner of the cell phone to a residence on E. Lapeer Street in the Village of Peck. Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to that location to check on the residents of the house.
Through the initial investigation, Deputies were able to determine that the male subject was accused of aggravated domestic assault including acts of strangulation against his wife at that location with an infant child in the residence at the time. The male suspect was arrested and Protective Services was requested to respond to the scene. Upon their arrival, Deputies attempted to take the infant into temporary protective custody when the mother became combative.
The female became violent and in an attempt to take her into custody, she assaulted the arresting Deputy, attempting to disarm them by trying to get the gun out of their holster but was able to remove their pepper spray. Assisting Deputies were able to deploy their taser causing the suspect to let loose of the pepper spray. The 30-year-old female suspect was medically cleared and lodged at the Sanilac County Jail on Multiple Felony charges of Disarming a Police Officer, Resisting and Obstructing and Child Neglect. The 31-year-old male suspect was transported to the Sanilac County Jail on Felony charges of Strangulation and Aggravated Domestic Assault.
The incident remains under investigation and both suspects are being held without bond pending their arraignment in District Court. Their names are being withheld pending arraignment.
Sheriff’s Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau, Michigan State Police and Tri-County EMS.
Sheriff Biniecki stated, “This case is a reminder that this type of violent encounter can happen anywhere at any time. The situation could have had a tragic outcome and goes to show you how important having the right tools to do the job is, such as tasers”.
