MIDLAND, MI – A Mio man is being held without bond in the Midland County Jail on murder charges in connection with the death of a 4-month-old baby girl.
Richard Paul Watson, 44-years-old, has been charged with homicide, first-degree child abuse and open murder in connection with the death of Evelyn Patricia Legacy. He is the boyfriend to the mother of the child.
Watson and the baby’s mother had taken the baby shopping at an IKEA store in Canton on Sunday, August 9th, 2015. While at the store, employees noticed the child was in distress. They called rescuers.
While at the IKEA store, it was determined the baby was suffering from severe respiratory problems, and she was taken to St. Mary Mercy Hospital in Livonia, then immediately airlifted to CS Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor.
Evelyn Legacy died at CS Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor 3 days later.
It is alleged that Richard Watson has admitted to shaking the baby. Medical records state the injury that caused her death was a traumatic brain injury, and it was found that she had suffered three fractured ribs and a broken tibia (lower leg) sometime previous to her death.
Watson stated in court that he is unemployed, and his income is from disability and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. He also suffers from various medical problems which include post traumatic stress disorder, a traumatic brain injury, is blind in one eye and deaf in one ear.
A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf and a judge ordered he get a court-appointed lawyer. Bond was denied and the next hearing in the case was set for September 8th, 2015.
If convicted, Richard Watson faces life in prison.
A memorial service for Evelyn Patricia Legacy will take place at 7 p.m. on Monday, August 24th, 2015 at the Gephart Funeral Home in Bay City.
