The DTF was conducting an investigation into narcotics sales in the Port Huron Township area. A suspect in the investigation was located in the passenger seat of a van that pulled into the Speedy Q Market on Water Street in Port Huron Township, shortly before midnight Tuesday night, September 29th, 2015.
A woman, who was driving the van pulled up to the gas pumps at the store. A Sheriff’s Office road patrol deputy and Members of the DTF attempted to make contact with the suspect at that time. As they approached the vehicle, the 41 year old Port Huron man pulled out a gun and began waving it around. The officers backed off. At that point, the woman was able to get out of the van without injury.
The St. Clair County Sheriff Special Response Team was called and negotiations began with the suspect to surrender. Despite the negotiations, the man refused to exit the vehicle. Eventually, OC gas, (pepper gas) was deployed into the van, in an attempt to get the man to give himself up, without effect. Shortly after 3:00 a.m., the suspect turned the gun on himself and fired. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives from the Sheriff’s Office are investigating the incident.
Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Port Huron Police Department assisted at the scene.
