BEAR CREEK TOWNSHIP, MI – According to Sheriff Pete Wallin, on Tuesday, October 13th, 2015, at approximately 7:45 p.m., Emmet County Deputies, were on an unrelated traffic stop, in the Wal-Mart Parking lot, Bear Creek Township, when they were approached by two males, who stated they had a male subject pull up to their car and pointed a gun at them.
The investigation revealed that the two males were southbound on US 131 south, attempting to turn onto Anderson Road, when they were cut off by another vehicle, also attempting to turn onto Anderson Road, from the wrong lane. A verbal confrontation occurred between the occupants of both vehicles, at which time a gun was pointed at the two males. The suspect vehicle was located a short time later in the Walgreens Parking Lot at US 131 and Charlevoix Ave., by the Petoskey Department of Public Safety Officers.
The alleged suspect who pointed the gun, Dennis Ray Hect, age 70, Clio, MI, was arrested and charged with two counts of Assault With A Dangerous Weapon (Felonious Assault), and two counts of Weapons – Felony Firearms. When Hect was arrested, he had in his possession of a .32 caliber pistol and had a Michigan Concealed Pistol License to do so. Hect was arraigned in 90th Distinct Court on Wednesday, October 14, 2015, and posted a $5000.00 cash/surety bond.
