GARDEN CITY, MI – An arrest and arraignment have taken place for the hit and run killing of a 52-year-old Garden City man.
Devin Andre Brooks, 39-years-old, of Westland, was arraigned on Saturday, December 5th, 2015, at the 21st District Court on the charge of failing to stop and identify at the scene of an accident resulting in death.
Brooks was taken into custody around 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, December 2nd, 2015, while driving on Interstate 96 at Beech-Daly Road in Redford Township, in connection with the hit and run accident that occurred on Monday night at about 8:45 p.m. on Ford Road east of Middlebelt Road.
George Punga, 52-years-old, of Garden City, was crossing the street when he was hit in the westbound lanes by either a white SUV or a red minivan. He was then hit by a white Dodge Challenger, which had with dark tinted windows, in the eastbound lanes.
Not one of those drivers stopped.
The victim lived a block away from the accident scene. He was taken to Garden City Hospital. He was then taken by helicopter to the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, where he later died.
The suspect was arrested after tips came into authorities that were followed up on. Police put surveillance on the man where 0fficers were able to locate and recover the suspect vehicle in a garage on Prevost Street in Detroit where the auto was being hidden.
Bond was set at $5,000 cash.
