Guilty Plea for Augusta Twp. Official Charged with Embezzling Property Taxes

LANSING, MI –Former Augusta Township Deputy Treasurer Brandon Humeniak, 21-years-old, of Willis, pleaded guilty to three counts of Embezzlement by a Public Official. Embezzlement

Humeniak was charged after an investigation showed that he removed cash deposits intended for property taxes and used the funds to pay his personal bills instead.

“This case is the type of egregious violation of the public trust that damages the very foundation of our governmental institutions,” said Schuette. “Those who commit such crimes and take advantage of Michigan families must be held accountable.”

Charges were filed against Humeniak after a joint investigation by the Michigan State Police (MSP) and Department of Attorney General Public Integrity Unit into Augusta Township record keeping after local residents received delinquency notices on property taxes they had already paid. August Township is located in Washtenaw County.

Humeniak is scheduled for sentencing on Monday, February 22nd, 2016 at 1:30 P.M. in front of Judge David S. Swartz in Washtenaw County Circuit Court.
