MANISTEE, MI -Two Manistee juveniles were arrested after they stole multiple vehicles and destroyed property.
At 5:43 on Monday, January 18th, 2016, deputies were dispatched to Aura Street in the Village of Kaleva for a possible stolen vehicle that was abandoned in a ditch. Deputies located the unoccupied truck stuck in the snow with the engine running. The vehicle was registered to a Kaleva resident. After a brief interview with the owner of the truck, it was confirmed the vehicle was taken from his driveway without permission.
As deputies investigated, they determined that two male juvenile suspects (one from Mesick & one from Kaleva) had stolen three different vehicles during the early morning hours; each vehicle had the keys left inside. The first vehicle stolen was a 2003 Hyundai. The juvenile suspects got that vehicle stuck in the snow. They left on foot, and proceeded to take another vehicle without permission; a 1996 Dodge Truck with a plow. They used the truck to pull out the Hyundai. They returned the Hyundai to its original location; however it was damaged and had two flat tires. They went out joy riding again, and proceeded to get the pickup truck stuck as well. They went back to the same residence that they took the Hyundai from earlier, and found a 1999 Ford Explorer to use. They took the Explorer to attempt to pull out the truck. A witness stopped to offer help; but quickly realized the truck belonged to someone he knew, not the juveniles. When he advised he was calling police, the two juvenile sped off in the Ford Explorer.
During their joyrides, the subjects destroyed multiple mailboxes in the Village of Kaleva as well. There was damage to both the Hyundai and the Ford Explorer. No damage was reported from the pickup truck owner. Estimates of the damage were unavailable at the time of this release.
Both juvenile suspects were apprehended at a residence in Kaleva without incident. Both juveniles were turned over to a parent on scene to await juvenile court action for multiple crimes including Unlawful Driving Away an Automobile (UDAA), Malicious Destruction of Property (MDOP), and Driving Without a License.
