WALKER, MI – One person was killed in a fiery head-on crash in Walker on Friday, April 1st, 2016.
The head-on collision occurred at Wilson Avenue SW and Butterworth Street about 8 a.m. Friday morning. That is at the border of Walker and Grandville. One of the vehicles, a newer Ford pickup truck, caught fire as a result of the crash.
The driver of a silver sedan is identified as a 36-year-old man, Robert Martin Vanderploeg, from Jenison. He died at the scene of the accident.
Witnesses told deputies that the southbound vehicle, a silver sedan, driven by Robert Vanderploeg, was swerving all over the roadway. As callers were calling 911 to report it, the sedan crossed the center line and hit a blue pick-up truck head-on.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts and speed is not considered a factor.
The driver of the truck, a 32-year-old Marne man, was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The man’s dog, a black Collie mix named Gunner, ran away after the crash. If you see the dog, please call the Walker Police Department at 616-791-6887.
As of 10:40 a.m. the roadway was reopened.
The names of those involved in the crash have not been identified at this time.
