DETROIT, MI – Three people were killed when they were ejected from a speeding SUV during an overnight crash on I-94 in Detroit.
The accident occurred on I-94 near Helen Avenue in the eastbound lanes at about 1:00 a.m, on Saturday, April 2nd, 2016. That is near Mt. Elliott on the city’s east side.
The driver of a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer was speeding on the interstate when the driver lost control, went up the freeway embankment and struck a light pole. The SUV then rolled several times back onto the freeway. The driver, front passenger and one rear passenger were all ejected from the vehicle. Two of the passengers were pronounced dead at the scene. The third was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. One of those killed was a 20-year-old female.
The fourth passenger of the vehicle, who was sitting in the back seat, had to be extricated from the SUV by firefighters. That person remains in critical condition in the hospital.
It is unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
The accident remains under investigation. The names of those involved have not been released at this time.
