Oakland County Man Killed in Head-on Motorcycle Accident

INDEPENDENCE TOWNSHIP, MI – The Oakland County Sheriff’s Department Crash Reconstruction Unit is assisting deputies from the Independence Township Substation with the investigation of a fatal crash that occurred on Clarkston Road near Lakeview Drive at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday, April 16th, 2016.Fatal Crash

John J. Cox, 55-years-old, of Clarkston, was operating a 2013 Harley Davidson XL883N motorcycle east on Clarkston Road when he lost control, crossed the center line and hit a west bound 2007 GMC Acadia operated by a 30-year-old resident of Flushing head-on.

Mr. Cox, who was wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the GMC was wearing a seatbelt and her one year daughter was properly restrained in a child seat in the backseat.  Both were treated at the scene by the Independence Township Fire Department and released.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this crash, which remains under investigation.

Coxhusband of Jamie; father of Greg (Brittney) Briggs, Rachelle and Kimberly Cox; son of Geneva (late Oliver) Cox; grandpa “Pa Jeff” of Zachary Briggs and Dylan Hartfield; son in law of Judy Briggs and Allen Briggs; brother of Jim (Maryo) Cox and late Lewis Cox; brother in law of Kirk David (Jennifer) Briggs and Sheila (Fred) Schaller; uncle of Aaron Cox, Shaun Parrish, Stephanie Cummins, Kirk Briggs, Kori Briggs, Lulu Briggs, Sam and Sydney Nardizzi, Jeremy and John Schnaidt, and Jack Grebe.

Jeff loved his wife and children with all his heart and loved to spend time with them at their cottage in Alpena.  Boating and being on the water with his family and friends was the greatest joy for him.  Jeff will be remembered as a person who was eager to help anyone in need.  He was very proud of his home remodeling and building skills.  Jeff also loved his dogs Shelby and Percy;they were a big part of his life.
