SANDUSKY, MI – The Sanilac County Sheriff wants to remind the citizens of Sanilac County that there has been a rash of I.R.S. imposters calling county residents. The following information is being provided to educate and assist you in dealing with this type of activity:
I.R.S. Impostor Scam
The I.R.S. Impostor Scam is an intimidating and sophisticated phone scam, where callers claim to be I.R.S. employees and say you owe taxes. They might also; threaten to arrest or deport you if you don’t pay, know all or part of your Social Security Number, rig the Caller ID to make it look like the call is from the I.R.S., or tell you to put the money on a prepaid debit card and tell them the card number.
Please understand that the I.R.S. WILL NOT:
A. Call to demand immediate payment about taxes owed without first sending you a notification by mail
B. Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone
C. Threaten to bring in local police or other law enforcement to arrest you for nonpayment
If you have any doubts, call the I.R.S. directly at 800-829-1040 or, if you’ve spotted a scam or think you may have been scammed contact your local Police Department or the Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office Detective Division at 810-648-8360 for advice or guidance.
