HOLLAND, MI – At 10:00 p.m., on Tuesday, May 24th, 2016, an officer from the Holland Department of Public Safety observed a vehicle exiting an apartment complex at a high rate of speed on Stratford Way near 12th Street.
The officer followed the suspect vehicle and attempted a traffic stop near Cypress Avenue and 12th Street. The suspect vehicle refused to stop and fled from the officer going North on Cypress. The suspect vehicle turned West on 8th street and ran the stop sign at 8th Street and Cypress. The suspect vehicle continued West on 8th street refusing to stop for the officer.
The suspect vehicle continued West on 8th Street going through a green light at Waverly Road. The suspect vehicle then proceeded into the intersection of US-31 despite a red light, resulting in an accident with two other vehicles that were traveling on US-31.
It was determined that the lone occupant of the fleeing vehicle was ejected as a result of the crash and died due to injuries sustained. No serious injuries were sustained by the other parties involved and the accident remains under investigation by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.
US-31 was closed in both directions between 16th Street and Lakewood Boulevard in Holland. Westbound 8th Street at US-31 was also closed. The streets were reopened around 1:30 a.m.
The identity of the individuals involved and the specifics of the crash will later be released by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department.
