WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, MI – The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office states that a 70-year-old Shelby Township woman was killed when she drove the wrong way on north bound M-53 on June 29th, 2016. The woman caused a head-on crash with another vehicle in Washington Township.
The crash happened on northbound M-53 between 30 Mile and 31 Mile roads about 12:20 a.m.
The Shelby Township woman, Maria Pierce, collided with a 52-year-old man from Port Austin.
Pierce, was driving a purple 1993 Lincoln Town Car southbound in the northbound lanes when she hit the man, who was driving northbound in a 2016 Chevrolet Cruze, according to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office press release.
Maria Pierce died at the scene of the crash. The man was taken to Henry Ford Macomb Hospital for treatment and then transferred to Henry Ford main hospital in Detroit
Both drivers were wearing seat belts. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the accident.
