At approximately 6:20 a.m., Montmorency County Dispatch received a 911 call indicating two bodies were found at a residence in the 22000 block of M-32 in Rust Township. A 22-month-old child of the couple was found unharmed at the residence.

According to family and friends of the two, Klein recently left Shay after an incident of domestic violence in which Shay was arrested. Once the case was adjudicated, a no contact order between Shay and Klein was dismissed. As a result, Klein took their daughter to Shay’s residence at approximately 5:45 a.m. Sunday for Shay to babysit while Klein went to work at Otsego Memorial Hospital in Gaylord.
According to authorities, Shay attacked and killed Danielle Klein by beating her, pulling out a pistol and then shooting her several times.
Neighbors have stated that Eric Shay had a history of theft, being very volatile and erratic.
The evidence at the scene suggested Shay attacked and shot Klein multiple times after she exited her vehicle at his residence. After the attack, Shay then notified a family member of Klein’s to pick up the child before he then took his own life.
Forensic autopsies of both subjects are scheduled for Monday, August 8th, 2016, in Grand Rapids.
The investigation continues into the matter.
The Montmorency County Medical Examiner’s Office also assisted at the scene.
Funeral arrangements have been published for Danielle Klein. Funeral services for Eric Shay were held privately.
