PORT HURON, MI – The Port Huron Police Department has in custody a 33 year old Port Huron man, and a 40 year old Port Huron woman in conjunction with the hit and run fatal accident which occurred in the 1000 block of Oak Street back in September, 2015.
Officers were dispatched to the scene at approximately 6:22am on September 2, 2015 on a report of an unconscious female laying in the roadway bleeding. The female was immediately rendered aid by responding Port Huron Firefighters and Tri-Hospital EMS personnel. She was then transported to Lake Huron Medical Center and later transported to McLaren Macomb hospital for additional treatment. Unfortunately the victim, identified as Eleanor Denise Smith, age 79(at the time), succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased several hours after the accident.
The case has remained open and investigators have been working to obtain the identity of the driver of the vehicle that struck Smith. On October 10, 2016 investigators received information on a potential suspect. The Port Huron Police NET unit, and detective bureau located the suspect, identified as Matthew David Jarvis and was able to link Jarvis to the case. Another person on location during the arrest, identified as Ann Marie Chubb, provided what turned out to be false information to police.
Jarvis has been charged with failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in serious impairment or death, a 5 year felony. Jarvis stood mute earlier today at arraignment on the charge with a probable cause conference set for October 25, 2016 at 9am. Bond was set for Jarvis at $50,000.
Chubb was charged with lying to a peace officer on a criminal investigation with a 4 year or greater imprison sentence. She also stood mute earlier today at arraignment on the charge with a probable cause conference set for October 25, 2016 at 9am. Bond was set for Chubb at $50,000.
