OTISCO TOWNSHIP, MI – On Saturday, October 22nd, 2016, at approximately 8:05 a.m., deputies from the Ionia county Sheriff’s Office responded to an industrial accident.
The accident took place at the Belding fruit Storage facility, located in Ionia County’s Otisco Township.
During the investigation it was determined that an employee, Arturo “Sam” Medina, 62 of Gowen, had been attempting to change light bulbs in one of the facilities large fruit cooling rooms. Medina was inside of an apple crate and a co-worker had raised him up with a forklift to a height of approximately 20 feet. The bottom of the apple crate was rotted and gave way allowing the apple crate to tip over and eject Medina who was not wearing a safety harness or hard hat. Medina then fell 20 feet to the concrete floor and sustained fatal injuries from the fall. Medina was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Medina was a 38 year employee of the Belding fruit storage facility. Ionia County Sheriff’s Office Victim advocates responded to the scene to assist co-workers and family with their grieving. Ionia County Sheriff’s Office Victim Advocates and management personal from Belding Fruit Storage are making arrangements to have grief counselling services available to all employees as they return to work on Monday morning.
MIOSHA was called and responded to the scene on Saturday morning. At the time of this press release they are on scene and investigating the incident.
Also responding to the scene was: Belding Fire Department, LIFE EMS, Sparrow Hospital Medical Examiner Investigator, and Lakes Funeral Home.
