WOLVERINE, MI – Sheriff Dale Clarmont stated on Saturday, January 21st, 2017, at 1:17 p.m., his department was dispatched to an armed suicidal subject in the 5000 block of Fourth St. in the Village of Wolverine.
It was reported a 50-year-old male had fired rounds inside and outside of a residence he was staying at. Occupants inside the home were able to escape.
Law enforcement arrived on scene and was able to cordon off the area for public safety and set up a perimeter to contain the subject who was still in the residence. Tuscarora Township Police and the Michigan State Police assisted on scene to help with public safety and containment of the subject. Due to the circumstances the Michigan State Police Emergency Support Team was summoned.
“Law Enforcement had the area contained and upon awaiting the arrival of the MSP ES Team the subject came out of the residence with a shotgun wanting to take his life” said Clarmont. “At that point D/Lt. Michael Brege with the Sheriff Department started negotiations with the subject and after almost an hour the subject was taken into custody.”
The Sheriff commends everyone on scene for an outstanding job. “This was an extraordinary event that saw law enforcement come together for a peaceful resolution. This could have turned bad quickly, every officer on scene did an outstanding job” said Clarmont.
The Cheboygan County Prosecutor is reviewing the investigation for charges. The subject’s name is not being released at this time pending those charges and arraignment.
The investigation is ongoing and further information will be released as the investigation continues.
