MSP Canine finds Suspect hiding under Van after Police Chase on I-94

DETROIT, MI – On Wednesday, February 15th, 2017, at approximately 10:00 p.m., Michigan State Police Troopers attempted to stop a reckless driver on I 94.

The driver failed to stop and a pursuit ensued.  The chase lasted approximately 5 minutes.  It ended when the suspect struck a street sign.  He then fled on foot.  Troopers then established a perimeter and called for a canine.

K9 Otto and his partner arrived on scene and started a track.  Otto quickly found the suspect hiding under a van.  As Otto stuck his head under the van, the suspect kicked Otto in the head several times. Otto bit the suspect in the left shin and gained control of the suspect.  Troopers attempted to take the suspect into custody.  The suspect continued to resist arrest and was pepper sprayed before relenting and being taken into custody.

There was no injury to the troopers, Otto and no damage to the patrol car. The suspect was lodged at the DDC.

“This is just an example of people risking the lives of the public and police by failing to stop for a cop” stated F/Lt. Mike Shaw, Public Information Officer, “Simple traffic violations were made far worse by individuals failing to obey the directions of police.” The driver was lodged at the DDC.
