MANISTEE TOWNSHIP, MI – The Manistee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a two vehicle personal injury accident that claimed the life of a Manisteee man.
On Wednesday, March 29th, 2017, just before 9:00 p.,m., a two vehicle crash occurred on US 31 near Hahn Road in Manistee Township.
The preliminary investigation shows that an unknown vehicle/driver pulled out of Big Als’ parking lot to head south on US 31. In doing so, the unknown driver occupied the northbound lane. The vehicle’s driver immediately turned back into Big Al’s parking lot via a secured entrance.
That action of the unknown driver/vehicle caused the northbound driver, Dean Horaszewski, a 49-year-old man, from Manistee, to try and avoid a collision. Horaszewski maneuvered his 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass around the unknown vehicle; however cross into the path of an oncoming 1999 Chevrolet Suburban that was southbound on US 31 driven by a 24-year-old man from Onekama.
Dean Horaszewski was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Onekama man and his infant son were transferred to West Shore Medical Center where they were treated and released for minor injuries.
Seatbelts were used and airbags deployed on both vehicles.
The Manistee County Sheriff’s Office is seeking to locate and identify a tan or gold color SUV with a loud exhaust that left the scene. If anyone has information on this accident or of the unknown vehicle/driver, please call the Sheriff’s office at 231-723-8393 or Central Dispatch at 723-6241.
