Truck Driver Killed in Head-on Crash in Ionia County

BOSTON TOWNSHIP, MI – The Ionia County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal traffic crash that took place on E. Bluewater Hwy (M-21) at S. Hawley Hwy in Ionia County’s Boston Township.

Deputies were dispatched at approximately 10:32 am on Wednesday, April 5th, 2017 to a report of a head on crash involving two commercial trucks. The initial investigation at the scene determined a tandem-trailer grain truck being driven by Trevor Vanderwall, 34-years-old, from Hemlock, was traveling westbound of E. Bluewater Hwy (M-21) near Hawley Hwy when a southbound pickup truck, driven by Lisa Thrush, 40 years old, from Saranac, pulled into the path of the grain truck causing a collision.

The grain truck, in its attempt to avoid the collision with the pickup truck then crossed into the eastbound lane of M-21 where it struck an eastbound commercial truck head on.  This second collision caused the death of the other truck driver, Anthony Nunez, 40 years old, from Hudsonville.

Additional injuries in the accident were sustained by the female driver of the pickup truck and her 18-year-old son Hunter Thrush-Davis. Both were transported to the hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

The highway remains closed at this time and the investigation at the scene is ongoing, and additional details will be released as they become available.
