DETROIT, MI – At approximately 7:45 p.m. on Sunday April 9th, 2017 a large fight broke out in Rouge Park on Detroit’s west side over a parking spot.
Rouge Park was filled with people. Some have estimated that there were at least 500 or more people in the park at the time if the incident.
A large crowd gathered around two women who began fighting. The altercation began over a parking spot then the situation was calmed down for a short time until someone threw juice into a car. That is when everything escalated. An individual who has direct knowledge of the incident stated that the girl in black was the main instigator of the brawl.
Nearly all of those watching were cheering the fight on. One man in the crowd could be heard telling others not to step in and stop what was going on. There were a couple of people who did try to stop the brawl but they did not try hard enough.
One of the woman involved in the fight was stabbed in the chest by the other person. As the injured woman tried to get back on her feet to resume the struggle, she fell backwards. It was at that time that a group surrounded her, put her in a vehicle where they transported her to a local hospital.
Reports of the woman, believed to be in her early thirties, having died as a result of her being stabbed have been found to be untrue.
Several individuals who were at the park at the time that the brutal fight broke out had stated on social media and in private message that the woman did in fact die. One woman who said that she was front and center to the fight stated that there was no doubt that the woman dressed in black unfortunately lost her life.
During a heated exchange of words in comments on the social media site, the mother of one of the girls involved revealed that her daughter is pregnant.
Through posts on Facebook from family members of the stabbing victim, they have stated that she is alive and that she is at home resting.
While reviewing the video several times, the woman in black was not the only one stabbed during the incident. It appears that another person was also injured but not to the extent that the woman in black was.
Many of those who were in the park have made statements that alcohol played a definite factor into incident.
It is unknown if Detroit Police are or will be involved in an investigation as to those that were involved and injured in the assault. It was reported that police did not show up until long after the fight had ended. After authorities did arrive, they dispersed any remaining crowd out of the park.
There were a total of four videos that were posted to Facebook showing the fight. Facebook is continuing to delete the videos because they feel that they are inappropriate. One of the videos was posted by a person by the name of Brittany. Some 40,000 people had viewed and commented on that video. As of 12:30 p.m. on Monday, that video has disappeared from her feed and all of those comments have been deleted.
Shortly after the fight ended someone posted to Facebook, along with a photo, that the park was on fire. It is unknown if the fire was in any way connected to the fight.
The Detroit News is reporting today that “one of the victims, a 30-year-old woman, was listed in stable condition in an area hospital. Police are working to identify the other victim, who reportedly drove away from the scene in a black Buick.
Monday, police arrested two women, ages 21 and 22, in connection with the stabbings, Sgt. Adam Madera said.”
Anyone with information about the fight is asked to call the 6th Precinct at (313) 596-5640.
