BATTLE CREEK, MI – The body of a missing Detroit man has been located in the Kalamazoo River in Battle Creek.

Cortez Lewis, 31-years-old, of Detroit, had been missing since early March when he crashed his vehicle into the river.

“We are going to confirm that the body does appear to be the missing Cortez Lewis that went into the water and we have been searching for,” Detective Sgt. Troy Gilleylen said.

An extensive search of the river had turned up very little since his vehicle was pulled out of the water on March 4th.

The search for the 2017 Hyundai that he had been driving that early Saturday morning began after a motorist saw the car leave Dickman Road near Capital Avenue and crash through a fence and into the concrete channel of the river.

Lewis was located approximately one mile from where his vehicle had plunged into the water.

Identification found on the body confirmed to authorities that it was indeed Lewis. His body was found Sunday morning, April 23rd, 2017, by a fisherman.

The Lewis family has been notified.
