Detroit Man Charged in 8 month old Infants Death in Inkster Motel

DETROIT, MI – James Lee Saltmarshall, 22-years-old, of Detroit, has been charged in connection with the death of an eight-month-old infant girl.

She is reported to be his very own daughter.

On Thursday April 20th, 2017, at a motel in the 2600 block of Michigan Avenue, in the City of Inkster, James Saltmarshall was alone with the infant girl at the Alpine Motel when the mother left for work that morning.

Before the mother left for work, the infant was in good health.

At approximately 4:23 p.m. that same day, James Saltmarshall called 9-1-1 for assistance.  9-1-1 dispatch states that he told them the baby was left on the bed while he used the restroom, and when he came back out the baby wasn’t breathing.

Inkster Police responded to the motel where they assisted the Inkster Fire Department in taking the unresponsive infant to a local hospital for treatment.  She was then transferred to Children’s Hospital where she had been in critical condition.

Police were immediately suspicious of the reported circumstances and some of the information was conflicting. James Saltmarshall was taken into custody shortly after he was questioned.

On Sunday, April 23rd, 2017 the baby girl died from her injuries.

It is alleged that Saltmarshall killed his own child by causing trauma to her head. Rectal tearing was also observed on the baby when she was examined at the hospital.

This morning James Saltmarshall was charged with Felony Murder, Child Abuse Firsts Degree and Criminal Sexual Conduct First Degree.

Saltmarshall was arraigned today before 22nd District Court Judge Sabrina Johnson.  The probable cause conference is scheduled for April 26, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. before Judge Johnson.  There is no preliminary exam date at this time.  The defendant received a $2 Million dollar cash/surety bond.
