3 Rescued from Hamlin Lake after Boating Accident in Mason County

HAMLIN TOWNSHIP, MI – At 1:37 p.m., on Friday, May 5th, 2017 the Mason/Oceana 911 Center received a call reporting an overturned boat with 3 persons in the water on Hamlin Lake off Tamarac Village in Hamlin Township.

Mason County Sheriff deputies, Life EMS, Hamlin Fire & Rescue, and Mason County Sheriff Marine Patrol all responded to the scene.

Hamlin FD launched their 17 foot rescue boat and was able to pull three persons out of the water who were clinging to the side of an overturned 12 foot boat. The rescued persons are identified as a 41 year-old Ludington man, 24 year-old Ludington woman and their 7 year-old son. The child was wearing a life vest.

All three were transported to Spectrum Health/Ludington Hospital by Life EMS. The seven year-old child was later flown by Aero-Med to a hospital in Grand Rapids for further treatment.

The MCSO “Drug Recognition Expert” (D.R.E.) was summoned to the hospital and the case remains under investigation as a criminal matter. Upon conclusion of the investigation a report will be forwarded onto the Mason County Prosecutor’s Office.
