Boat Capsizes in Lake St. Clair

HARRISON TOWNSHIP, MI – On Thursday, May 18th, 2017, at 12:09p.m., the Macomb County Sheriff’s Marine Division was dispatched to a boat in distress with several people in the water; Lake St. Clair due east of 400 On The Lake condo association.

A group of men from Ohio, 5 total, came to Lake St. Clair to fish today. One of the boats, carrying three men, ages 53, 32, and 31, ran out of gas and began to drift. The men were attempting to switch to a reserve gas tank when water began coming in over the stern. With the high wind conditions and not being anchored, the boat took on water rapidly and capsized. The three males, who were not wearing life jackets, ended up in the water and clung to their boat until rescue arrived.

The second Ohio fishing boat was not far from the first boat and saw it in distress. The second boat, carrying two men, ages 46 and 44, was able to pull all three men from the water and take them safely to the shore where emergency crews were waiting. Despite water temperatures in the 50’s the men were uninjured.

It was noted that that the men did have life jackets on board. The capsized boat, a 20’ Stratos was towed to a nearby marina.
