DETROIT, MI – A video that went viral on Facebook live on Thursday, May 25th, 2017 is raising the anger of many who are trying to make Detroit a much better place to live, work and play.
MI Headlines was able to capture a copy of the video. It had been posted to one of the larger groups on Facebook that keeps a watchful eye over metro Detroit. It is unknown who actually filmed the fight because it had been shared out so many times on social media. Within a very short period of time, this copy of the video had been viewed over 40 thousand times.
The video shows a group of younger people, both boys and girls, getting into a fight on Detroit’s Riverwalk. There are also children and a dog that are dragged into the fracas. What becomes even more troubling is that the incident was taking place right at the river’s edge. Any one of those individuals could have gone over the railing and into the waters of the Detroit River. Many viewing the video commented with anger and disgust. The post with the video attached has been removed from that group on Facebook.
One of the more troubling questions once again rises to the top. Why did no one call police instead of getting the struggle on video? There were several that can be seen as the fight is taking place that they too were filming and not one was calling 9-1-1.
Many residents of the city, and even those who do not live in Detroit, who were posting comments after seeing the video are now rethinking their family plans of visiting downtown Detroit and its beautiful Riverwalk during the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend.
It is unknown at this time what sparked the confrontation.
This is not the first time in the past couple of months that video of a fights being posted to Facebook are coming from Detroit. First there was the brawl in Rouge Park on Sunday April 9th, on the westside of the city where two people were stabbed. One of those injured was a 30-year-woman who was involved in the fight. She was stabbed in the chest. She is still recovering from her injuries.
The second was in Greektown where a large fight broke out in the street outside of Greektown Casino. The fight happened early Easter Sunday morning, at about 2:30 a.m. Two men were knocked out cold in the brutal attack. One of those individuals was left in critical condition in ICU for several days. Fortunately, he did survive his injuries. So far six people have been arrested for that incident.
MI Headlines did inform the Detroit Police Department of the article and video. DPD said that this matter is now under investigation.
