HARRISON TOWNSHIP, MI – Response personnel from the Coast Guard and the Macomb County Sheriff’s Dive Team continued their search for a man who fell into Lake St. Clair Friday evening. They located his body just before 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning, June 24th, 2017.
The Coast Guard Sector Detroit command center in Detroit received notification at about 8 p.m. Friday night of a 44-year-old man, who has been identified as Virdest Orlando Day, of Redford Township, was missing in the waters of Lake St. Clair.
The boat had a total of seven people on board. They were returning from Jobbie Nooner on Gull Island. One of those passengers fell into the water. Virdest Day went into the water to help the overboard passenger. Day was wearing a life jacket but it was not secured and came off when he hit the surface of the water.
A Coastguard crew from St. Clair Shores responded to the scene. The Macomb County dive team was also on scene using a side-scanning sonar system to search beneath the surface of the water.
A Coast Guard response boat and helicopter continued their search the area after daybreak to locate Virdest Day. Personnel from the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Macomb County Police and a Macomb County helicopter were also involved in the search.
Day was located in 7 feet of water near Huron Pointe.
No foul play is suspected.
It’s unknown at this time if alcohol was a contributing factor in the incident.
The accident remains under investigation.
