LINCOLN TOWNSHIP, MI – The Midland County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a two vehicle, head on fatal traffic crash that claimed the life of an 18 year old Gladwin woman.

The fatal accident took place on eastbound US 10 west of Stark Road in Lincoln Township, at approximately 11:16 pm, on August 11th, 2017.

At 11:14 pm, Midland County Central Dispatch received a call reporting a vehicle traveling westbound in the eastbound lane of US 10 near Eastman Road. Two minutes later the head on crash was reported.

The investigation indicates that the driver, Janice Rozek, 67-years-old, from Auburn, was driving her red 2006 Chevy Equinox, westbound in the eastbound lane of US 10. She then struck a black 2000 Lincoln Town Car that was being driven by Kristina Garafalo, 18-years-old, of Gladwin. Her vehicle was heading eastbound on US 10.

A short time later there was a second crash at the scene. Ms. Garafalo’s vehicle had come to rest sideways in the roadway after the first crash. A silver 2005 Pontiac G6 driven by Brett Bohn, age 18 from Sanford, came upon the scene but was unable to stop in time and struck the rear passenger corner of the black 2000 Lincoln Town Car.

All the drivers appeared to be wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crashes.

Kristina Garafalo was pronounced dead at the scene.

Janice Rozek was transported to MMMC with critical injuries. Brett Bohn and his two passengers were not injured in the secondary crash.

While there is no evidence to indicate that alcohol or drugs may have been a factor in these crashes, authorizes are waiting for toxicology reports for a final determination. The report will be forwarded to the Midland County Prosecutor’s Office for review once it has been completed.

The Midland County Sheriff’s Office were assisted at the scene by Midland City Police, Lincoln Township Fire Rescue, Jerome Township Fire Rescue and Mid Michigan EMS.
