Two Detroit Men charged after leading MSP in Chase that started in Royal Oak

ROYAL OAK, MI – Two Detroit men have been formally charged after they lead Michigan State Police on a high speed chase that started in Royal Oak and ended in Southfield.

On Monday August 21st, 2017 at approximately 9:00PM, troopers from the Metro South Post troopers were contacted by Western Wayne CRT to assist with the arrest of suspects involved in a Larceny from Auto ring (tires and rims).

The task force provided information that the individuals had possibly been involved for over 2 years with numerous thefts throughout the district.

Undercover units followed the suspects to the area of Lincoln and Campbell roads in the city of Royal Oak. Metro South troopers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the suspects as they were observed attempting to break into vehicles. One suspect vehicle stopped at the scene and the second vehicle struck a Metro South patrol vehicle when troopers attempted to make a stop.

A pursuit was initiated by troopers and ended in the area of Greenfield and 9 Mile roads in the city of Southfield. The suspect vehicle lost control and overturned when it struck a cement barrier. There were to individuals who were occupying the vehicle.

Deshawn Shelton Gardner, 35-years-old, of Detroit and Jeffrey Lamont Miller, 32-years-old, also of Detroit, were the two individuals who were occupying the vehicle at the time of the crash. One occupant was ejected from the vehicle and a second was temporary trapped under the rolled over vehicle. Troopers freed the second subject and EMS responded to provide medical aid. Both subjects were transported to local hospital and were listed in temporary serious condition.

A total of three suspects were taken into custody.

No troopers reported injuries. A MSP patrol vehicle sustained minor damage from being struck by the suspects vehicle, but it was drivable.

The suspects were wanted by several police agencies for their involvement in numerous thefts throughout the metro area as well as assaulting police officers in Canton Twp.

Deshawn Gardner is charged with receiving and concealing a stolen motor vehicle, two counts of larceny from a motor vehicle and driving with a suspended license. Based on records from the Michigan Department of Corrections, he has several previous felony convictions. He has been convicted for:

  • Motor Vehicles-Conceal Or Misrepresent ID w/Int to Mislead
  • 6 counts of Larceny From a Motor Vehicle
  • 2 counts of Stolen Property – Receiving and Concealing – Motor Vehicle
  • Larceny From a Motor Vehicle – Conspiracy
  • Unlawfully Driving Away an Automobile
  • Police Officer – Assault/Resist/Obstruct Causing Injury

It appears that Gardner started his criminal activity in 2002.

Jeffrey Miller is charged with two counts of larceny from a motor vehicle. He also has previous felony convictions on his record all relating to motor vehicles. Miller has been convicted previously for:

  • 2 counts of Stolen Property – Receiving and Concealing – Motor Vehicle
  • Motor Vehicles-Conceal Or Misrepresent ID w/Int to Mislead

Miller’s life of crime dates back to 2006.
