CHICAGO, IL – Documentary TV series American Greed, which airs on CNBC, will be profiling the man at the center of the Detroit Public Schools kickback scheme.
It has been hard for those in Detroit to forget about millionaire businessman Norman Shy, the central figure in a kickback scheme that cheated the struggling Detroit Public Schools out of $2.7 million. Shy was convicted and sent to prison for 5 years on September 6th, 2016. At the time of his sentencing in September of 2016, Shy was called a killer of dreams and a thief of hope.
Norman Shy pleaded guilty in May of 2016 to billing DPS for school supplies that were never delivered. He was not alone in carrying out the money grabbing greedy scheme. He had the help of 12 principals and an assistant superintendent who approved his phony invoices in exchange for kickbacks.
The TV series American Greed will dig deep into how all of this played out for students, parents and tax payers in Detroit. The episode of Norman Shy and the principals who stole from DPS will air on Monday August 28th, 2017 at 10pm eastern/ 9pm central.
