CASEVILLE TOWNSHIP, MI – Last night a little before 10:30PM, Deputy Nathan Leppek was on patrol near the Dunn Rd. intersection of M-25 in Caseville Twp., when he attempted to stop a northbound vehicle for excessive speed.
The attempted stop prompted the driver of a 1997 Audi to accelerate even faster to speeds over 100 mph as the City of Caseville approached. Once in Caseville, the driver lost control on a curve near Michigan Ave. where the vehicle slammed into a business located at 6815 Main St., causing major damage to the building. The driver and passenger then fled on foot into the nearby woods and were unable to be found for a period of time.
Both were eventually located and identified. The 18 year old driver, from Sterling Heights, was arrested on a variety of charges, most of those being felony in nature. He was lodged in the Huron County Jail around 1:30 this morning with a $10,000 cash bond. The 16 year old passenger was released to his parents. Formal charges will be sought from the Prosecutor’s Office as the suspect is expected to be arraigned on Tuesday.
At the time of this release, it was unclear of any injuries as the report was not complete and the Deputy was likely sleeping due to his shift just ending a few hours ago.
Besides Deputy Woodward assisting Deputy Leppek with this incident, the Caseville Police, Fairhaven Twp Police and the Caseville Fire Department were also on scene.
