LAPEER, MI – On Sunday September 10th, 2017, at 5:55 PM, Lapeer County 911 dispatched Lapeer County EMS and Lapeer County Sheriff’s Deputies to the 100 block of Angle Road in Lapeer for an injury traffic crash that occurred on private property.
The home owner Dennis Peters, 65-years-old, of Lapeer, was performing mechanical repairs to a friend’s 2009 GMC Arcadia within his two car garage. Peters was assisted by a 30-year-old man from Fostoria. The front brakes were replaced and a wedge was placed behind the rear tire while the front of the vehicle was lifted. The repairs were completed and the vehicle lowered to the ground. The vehicle needed to be moved forward so the wedge behind the tire could be removed.
The air within the brake lines was not purged before the vehicle was moved. The 30-year-old man started the vehicle and drove it forward. Unfortunately, Dennis Peters was standing in front of the vehicle and the brakes were not functioning. The vehicle struck Peters and pinned him between the vehicle and a work bench within the garage. The vehicle was reversed to free Peters and 911 called.
Lapeer County EMS transported Peters to McLaren in Lapeer. Peters remained hospitalized in Lapeer until he passed away during the late evening hours of Monday September 11th due to complications from the injuries that he sustained from the accident.
Preliminary investigation suggest this appears to be an unfortunate tragic event. This incident does remain under investigation by the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office and Lapeer County Medical Examiner’s Office.
