Detroit Man Formally Charged in Shooting of his Niece

DETROIT, MI – On Sunday September 17th, 2017, Ira C. Ellis , 57-years-old, of Detroit was charged in connection with killing his niece Katherine Grimes, 42-years-old, also of Detroit.

On Friday September 15th, 2017, at 10:35 a.m., at a home in the 15800 block of Winthrop it is alleged that Ellis fatally shot his niece multiple times with a handgun. Detroit police officers were called to the scene and placed Ellis under arrest. Medics pronounced Ms. Grimes dead on the scene.

Ellis was charged with First Degree Murder and Felony Firearm. He was arraigned on September 17, 2017 in 34th District Court and remanded to the Wayne County Jail. His probable cause hearing is on September 27, 2017 at 8:30 a.m.; the preliminary examination is on October 4, 2017 both before Judge Kenneth King.
