Child Critically Injured in Traffic Crash involving Semi-Truck and Amish Buggy

COLFAX TOWNSHIP, MI – A child was critically injured early Friday morning in a crash that involved a semi-truck and an Amish buggy near Manton.

Shortly after 8:00AM on Friday, November 10th, 2017, an 11-year-old boy lost control of the reigns on his Amish buggy at the intersection of 16 Road and 35 Road in Colfax Township in Wexford County.

The horse and buggy were south bound on 35 Road when it traveled out into the path of a semi-truck that was headed west bound on 16 Road. The semi-truck was driven by a 24-year-old man from Merritt. The driver of the semi took evasive action and struck the horse instead of the buggy.

A 9-year-old boy who was a passenger in the buggy was aero-med lifted to Traverse City Munson Hospital and onto Devos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids for critical injuries sustained in the crash.

The 11-year-old boy was uninjured, and an addition 6-year-old passenger sustained only minor injuries. Neither was hospitalized.

The driver of the semi was unharmed and was found not to be at fault for the accident.
