SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI – On Tuesday November 21st, 2017, at approximately 5:03pm, the Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to a deceased 42 year old black male located in a residence on Gonyer Road in Springfield Township.
The cause of death was determined to be a gunshot wound. The victim is identified as Broderick Ward, 42-years-old, of Inkster.
Fox2Detroit interviewed his family and they stated that he was in the area on a fishing trip. Broderick Ward was the father of three who left Thursday with an old friend named Jason, to go salmon fishing in Kalkaska.
A joint investigation between the Kalkaska Sheriff’s Office the Michigan State Police and the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office was initiated. “This investigation led to the 36-year-old black male from Wisconsin being taken into custody,” said Sgt. David Johnson with Michigan State Police Houghton Lake Post. “The incident is drug-related and the parties involved are believed to be known to each other.”
Two more people were arrested after the initial first man from Wisconsin being taken into custody. According to the Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Department, two men and one woman are in custody and are charged in connection with the alleged murder.
The investigation is ongoing and updates will be forthcoming as information is able to be released. The community is not at risk as there are no suspects at large.
The Kalkaska County Sheriff Office states that the incident is drug related and the parties involved are believed to be known to each other. However, Broderick Ward’s family states this is a case of racial profiling.
The suspect’s name is not being released at this time pending arraignment. Formal charges will be reviewed by the Kalkaska County Prosecuting Attorney.

Brodrick Ward also known as “Brock” was a loving Father, Grandfather, Son, Brother, Uncle and a great friend to so many. November 21st Brodrick tragically lost his life to a senseless act of racial profiling. Unfortunately, Brodrick did not have a large enough insurance policy to fully cover all of his expenses. My family is going through an devastating time due to his sudden death. We are doing everything in our power to bring justice for our loved one. We are asking for any donations to help give Broderick the proper homegoing. Anyone who knew Brock knew that he was a loving, caring, giving, funny person with the most laid back personality . Thank you love The Ward family! #JusticeForBrock #BlackLivesMatter
