ORION TOWNSHIP, MI – Because the holiday season has just begun, we felt this to be a good time to remind everyone to keep watch on family and friends for possible signs of suicide.
Though is it a proven myth that the suicide rate increases during the time from Thanksgiving through New Years, it is still a time when we need to embrace our loved ones and friends to let them know that we are there for them every day of the year when needed. Mental illness does not take a holiday.
One family is feeling that grief today after Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputies and the Orion Township Fire Department on Saturday November 25th, 2017, at approximately 2:00pm, responded to the 3000 block of High Grove Way for a victim with a gunshot wound to the head.
The victim and a friend were in the lower level of a home when the friend heard a gun discharge in the bathroom. The friend reported that the 16-year-old boy from Detroit had came downstairs with the handgun and had made suicidal statements to his friend prior to entering the bathroom. The friend found the 16-year-old on the bathroom floor with a gunshot wound to the head.
Detectives responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. The investigation revealed that teenager had taken the pistol from his grandfather’s bedroom. It is unknown why the boy had become distraught.
The Chaplains Corp responded to assist family members at the scene. The OCSO Forensic Science Lab arrived and processed the scene. An Investigator from the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene.
The incident remains under investigation.
It also not known how the boy got access to his grandfather’s gun. However, this particular death might have been easily prevented if the gun had been in a locked, secured space along with a trigger lock which is easy to obtain.
