CHEBOYGAN, MI – Cheboygan County Sheriff Dale Clarmont stated on Monday November 27th, 2017, at 4:00pm, his department was dispatched to the area of US 23 and Harmony Lane for three subjects cutting boughs illegally on state and private property.
Upon arrival of deputies the subjects fled on foot. Two were apprehended immediately. The investigation did show that several trees had been stripped of boughs. The third subject was eventually located by the Cheboygan County K-9 units and arrested not far from the scene hiding in tall grass near a wood line.
The investigation is ongoing and the names have not been released pending arraignment. “At this time we believe their involvement to be in at least four different locations around the county where we have found damage to over 600 trees on state and private land that will total in the thousands of dollars,” said Clarmont.
The Sheriff Department was assisted by the Department of Natural Resources and the Cheboygan Department of Public Safety.
