Grand Traverse County Man Pleads Guilty to 10 Counts of Possession of Child Porn

TRAVERSE CITY, MI – Daniel Smith, 25-years-old, of Grawn, has pleaded guilty to 10 counts of Possession of Child Sexually Abusive Materials, a four-year felony. Smith was charged after an investigation by the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) taskforce discovered child pornography on a laptop which he owned and exclusively used.

“Viewing, downloading and sharing child pornography is a crime that continues the cycle of sexual violence against children,” said Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette. “The children in these pictures and videos were robbed of their innocence, and I will not stand by and let that continue.”

Smith pleaded guilty on Friday, December 1, 2017 before Judge Thomas Power in the 13th Circuit Court in Grand Traverse County. He has not yet been given a sentencing date.

In late 2016, a Michigan State Police detective who serves on ICAC was conducting a routine online investigation into offenders who share child pornography and uncovered an IP address that was sharing a large amount of child pornography images. The ICAC investigation determined that the IP address was used by Daniel Smith.

In addition to a manual on how to molest young children, over 2000 images of child pornography were found on computers and hard drives owned and exclusively used by Smith was found. No evidence of Smith having contact with young children was found.
