DETROIT, MI – On Friday, December 8th, 2017, at approximately 4:15am, the MSP Detroit Regional Dispatch Center started to receive phone calls about a vehicle driving southbound in the northbound lanes of I-75 in downtown Detroit.
The vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed. The DRCC notified MDOT operations who started to notify motorists of the wrong way driver using the electronic messaging boards along the freeway. Troopers from the Metro North Post located the vehicle and were able to get the driver safely stopped.
The roadside investigation revealed that the driver, a 27-year-old woman, Tonya Berta, from Ida, Michigan, was intoxicated. She was then arrested and placed in the patrol car.
To make matters even worse, during a search of the Berta’s vehicle, troopers discovered a toddler, who appeared to be about one years old. The boy was found under a blanket in the backseat. The child was not secured in a car seat. The child appeared to be unharmed.
Troopers transported him to the post. Child Protective Services were contacted and they worked with troopers to provide a safe location for the child.
Tonya Berta, has been charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, resisting an officer and child endangerment.
The investigation is continuing by MSP and CPS.
