On Friday, December 8th, 2017, at approximately 4:15am, the MSP Detroit Regional Dispatch Center started to receive phone calls about a vehicle driving southbound in the northbound lanes of I-75 in downtown Detroit.
The vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed going the wrong way down the expressway. MSP Troopers from the Metro North Post located the vehicle and were able to get the female driver safely stopped.
A roadside investigation revealed that the driver, a 27-year-old woman, Tonya Berta, from Ida, Michigan, was intoxicated. She was arrested and placed in the patrol car.
To make matters even worse, during a search of the Berta’s vehicle, troopers discovered a toddler, who appeared to be about one years old. The boy was found under a blanket in the backseat. The child was not secured in a car seat. The child appeared to be unharmed.
Tonya Berta, plead guilty to the charges of operating while intoxicated with an occupant under the age of 16-yer-old, operating while intoxicated second-offense, second-degree child abuse, and resisting/assaulting/obstructing an officer. She is expected to be sentenced on March 13th, 2018.
