DETROIT, MI – On Sunday March 4th, 2018, at approximately 2:15 AM, MSP troopers from the Metro South Post were dispatched to a two-car crash on westbound I-94 near I-75.
Based on the initial investigation and information collected, the sequence of the fatal crash is as follows:
A 2011 Chrysler 200 was traveling west on I-94 FWY in the right lane. The Chrysler 200 rear ended an unknown vehicle and stopped in the right lane. The crash caused a significant amount of damage to the front of the Chrysler 200. The unknown vehicle fled the scene. The Chrysler 200 remained stopped in the right lane.
A 44-year-old woman from Lansing excited the vehicle to examine the damage that was caused by the crash. She
attempted to get back into the car (back seat passenger side). As she was getting back into the vehicle, a 2017 Ford Escape was traveling westbound on I-94 in the right lane. The driver of the 2017 Ford Escape noticed the Chrysler 200 stopped and blocking the lane of travel. That driver tried to avoid rear ending the Chrysler 200 by merging into the right shoulder.
The driver was unsuccessful in avoiding a collision and side swiped the right side of the Chrysler 200 with the left side of her Ford Escape. During the collision, the Ford Escape struck the passenger of the 200 who was standing by the rear passenger side door of the Chrysler 200. The Ford Escape traveled for approximately 150
yards west on the freeway until coming to stop blocking the right lane.
The passenger was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
It was learned that the driver of the escape has a suspended license.
The investigation continues by the Metro South Post.
