COMMERCE TOWNSHIP, MI – A 31-year-old Waterford Township man is being investigated for arson after he allegedly set his own vehicle on fire early Friday morning at around 7:15 am.
On Friday March 16th, 2018, Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputies and the Commerce Township Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire behind the CVS Pharmacy located near Union Lake Rd and Commerce Rd.
Upon their arrival, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. The scene was secured and firefighters from the Commerce Township Fire Department extinguished the fire. The Commerce Township Fire Chief requested to have the OCSO Fire Investigations Unit respond to assist them with determining the cause of the fire.
A witness who reported the fire approached a Deputy and advised him that there had been a suspicious person standing on the corner of Bywater Street near Commerce Rd. The Deputy located the male subject on Bywater Street, which is a few blocks from the scene of the vehicle fire. Deputies ascertained that he was the owner of the vehicle and transported him to the Commerce Township Substation to speak with Detectives.
An OCSO Fire Investigator responded to the scene to conduct a cause and origin investigation. An OCSO K-9 Unit established a track beginning where the suspect had been located and leading back to the scene of the vehicle fire. The vehicle was impounded as evidence and Fire Investigation Unit Detectives will be continuing with the investigation. The cause of the fire has been determined to be Arson. The incident remains under investigation.
He was later released pending further investigation.
