ERIE TOWNSHIP, MI – A fatal traffic crash between a pickup truck and a semi has claimed the life of an Ohio man that occurred on southbound I-75, north of the Michigan/ Ohio state line, in Erie Township, at approximately 3:38 AM, on Monday March 26, 2018.
Preliminary investigation reveals that Ryan A. Kersey, 31-years-old, of Oregon, OH , was driving a blue in color 2018 Dodge pick-up truck southbound on I-75. While traveling southbound, the Dodge pick-up struck the rear of a semi tractor/ trailer, which was traveling southbound in the center travel lane.
The semi tractor/ trailer was being operated by a 64 year old Southgate, MI man who is identified as Mark Raphael. After the initial collision, the dodge pick-up came to rest along the east shoulder of the roadway where it became fully engulfed in fire.
Ryan Kersey was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries suffered in the crash.
Excessive speed appears to be a factor in the crash.
It is unknown if the driver of the Dodge pick-up was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. It is unknown at this time if alcohol is a factor in the crash.
Monroe Community Ambulance, Morin Pointe Fire Department, Toledo Police Department, Toledo Fire Department and the Michigan State Police-Commercial Motor Carrier Division assisted at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation by Deputy Sheriffs Brian Quinn, Jon Cregar and Brian Francisco of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Services Bureau along with Deputy Brandon Benes of the Uniform Services Division.
