Woman charged with leaving Children Alone in Detroit Motel Room

DETROIT, MI – The mother of two children, who were left alone in a Detroit motel room is being charged with two counts of Child Abuse Second Degree. The children were discovered after bullets started flying from the parking lot and police were sent to investigate that shooting.Child Abuse

Michele Penick, 24-years-old has been charged with two counts of Child Abuse Second Degree. On Monday March 27th, 2018, at approximately 1:00 a.m., she is alleged to have left her two young children alone in a motel room in the 20500 block of James Couzens, at the Cranbrook House Motel, a 29-year old man reported that he was walking through the parking lot of the motel when he heard some people arguing, then he heard shots being fired, and felt pain in his back.

The victim was conveyed to the hospital for treatment and had been listed in temporary serious condition.

While Detroit police officers were investigating the shooting that occurred in front of the motel they observed a bullet hole in the window a motel room. When they did a well-being check of the room, the children were discovered unsupervised. The children were placed with Child Protective Services. The mother was placed under arrest later on the same day.

Michele Penick is expected to be arraigned in 36th district court tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m.
