FLINT, MI – Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton issued criminal charges today against two individuals related to the weekend death of a 5-month old baby.
Rico Antonio Riggs, 19-years-old, of Flint, is charged with felony murder, 1st degree child abuse, 1st degree child abuse committed in the presence of another child, tampering with evidence, and intimidating witnesses related to the March 25th homicide of 5-month-old Jordan Algee, Jr.
The baby’s mother, 23-year-old Temara Shaniece Reed of Flint, is also charged with tampering with evidence, lying to a police officer conducting a violent crime investigation, being an accessory after the fact to a felony, and 3rd degree child abuse.
Mt. Morris Township police were contacted late Sunday evening, March 25th by the Genesee County Medical Examiner’s Office related to the suspicious death of a baby who had been taken to McLaren Flint’s emergency room earlier in the evening by Riggs and Reed for dire medical issues. McLaren officials decided to transfer the baby to Flint’s Hurley Medical Center for continued efforts to save him but he died at Hurley late Sunday evening.
“The autopsy reports indicate the baby was killed by blunt force trauma,” said Prosecutor Leyton.
“The investigation has lead us to Rico Riggs as the person who inflicted these injuries and caused the baby’s death. The mother has also been charged as an accomplice after the fact and for attempting to thwart the lawful police investigation,” Prosecutor Leyton said.
“We are working diligently to see that justice is served in this heart wrenching case,” said Prosecutor Leyton.
Riggs and Reed will be arraigned on their charges in 67th District Court this afternoon.
