SANDS TOWNSHIP, MI – On Tuesday May 1st, 2018, at 4:09PM, Troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Negaunee Post were dispatched to M-553 just south of the Marquette City limits (south of the Marquette Mountain Ski Hill) for the report of a personal injury crash involving a Marquette City Police patrol car and another passenger vehicle.
Investigation at the scene revealed a 2005 Pontiac Vibe, driven by 80 year old Nathanial Carpenter of Marquette, was travelling northbound on M-553 when it crossed the centerline and struck the Marquette City Police patrol car that was travelling southbound on M-553. Carpenter was pronounced dead at the scene. The Police Officer was transported to UP Health Systems in Marquette for treatment and is listed in stable condition.
M-553 was temporarily closed while MSP traffic crash investigators processed the scene.
The crash remains under investigation; however, it appears that a pre-existing medical condition likely contributed to the crash. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash and has not been contacted by law enforcement is asked to contact the MSP Negaunee Post at (906) 475-9922.
Troopers were assisted on scene by Officers from the Forsyth Township Police Department, Chocolay Township Police Department, Marquette Police Department, Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, Marquette City Fire Department and UP Health Systems EMS.
