GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Willie Bryant, who is the suspect in the murder of a woman in the City of Wyoming, was taken into custody Monday night on the northeast side of Grand Rapids without incident.

On Monday, May 21st, 2018, Grand Rapids Police issued a press release stating that the 900 block of Franklin St SE was shut down, for over 7 hours as a result of a critical incident that had taken place at a residence near the area where they had made a traffic stop.

It all began following a high risk stop by Grand Rapids patrol officers where officers believed the vehicle contained a murder suspect from that morning’s homicide in the City of Wyoming. The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody, but the suspect was not in the car.

The investigation revealed that the passenger of the vehicle, now identified as 33-year-old Willie Bryant, may have exited the vehicle just prior to the stop and entered a nearby home. The house was surrounded and GRPD personnel began critical incident procedures. GRPD Major Case Team, Special Response Team and Crisis Negotiator Team members responded to the scene and attempted to contact occupants in house beginning just prior to 11:00 am.

Two women exited the home when instructed to do so and were secured without incident. Commands continued into the home for seven hours with no response.

Just prior to 5:00 p.m., SRT members entered the home on a Wyoming Police Department search warrant, but no one was located inside. The scene was turned over to Wyoming Police and a majority of GRPD personnel were able to clear. Franklin St SE was then opened up to traveling motorists.

Later that same evening, Grand Rapids Police officers spotted Willie Bryant, who was a passenger in a vehicle around 9:00 p.m.. They attempted to make a stop on that vehicle but the driver fled and the suspect was again  able to get away.

GRPD then received an anonymous tip letting them know that Willie Bryant was at the McDonald’s located at 417 Michigan St NE. Bryant was arrested at 9:25PM. He was interviewed by detectives from both Grand Rapids and Wyoming before being lodged at the Kent County Jail without bond.

Bryant is accused of shooting a 55-year-old Grand Rapids woman in the face around 2:23 p.m. on Sunday, May 20th, at a residence in the 900 block of Thomas Street SE. She remains in the hospital in stable but yet critical condition.

It is being alleged that Willie Bryant one day later shot an killed a woman at a gas station in the City of Wyoming. It is believed that he shot and killed Shannon Rozanski-Schoen, 48-years-old, during an apparent robbery at the Marathon gas station located at 205 28th St. SW in Wyoming. She was employed at the gas station where she was killed.

Based on records from the Michigan Department of Corrections, Willie Bryant had previously spent time in prison after being convicted for:

  • Larceny From a Motor Vehicle
  • Controlled Substance-Possession Of Marijuana
  • 2 counts of Controlled Substance-Possess Narcotic/Cocaine < 25 Grams
