LANSING, MI – On Wednesday June 13th, 2018, at approximately 10:30am, the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office and medical first responders were dispatched to Lakeside Resort and Campground, a privately owned campground in the 700 block of E. Grand River Avenue of Orange Township- on the report of a man whom had reportedly drowned in the campground lake.
Deputies were notified that a man was found in the water and was not breathing, and that bystanders had removed him from the water and began giving him CPR. Upon the arrival of emergency medical responders from the Sheriff’s Office, Berlin-Orange Fire Department, and LIFE EMS- lifesaving efforts continued for some time until the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man has been identified as Pedro Lira, 47-years-old, of Lansing.
The investigation at the scene revealed that Pedro Lira had been at the campground to fish with a friend when he reportedly fell into the lake. A group of young children a few docks down from where Lira was fishing saw he was in distress and ran to the campground office to report the drowning. Campground staff contacted 911 and began lifesaving attempts.
Investigation also revealed that there may have been a pre-existing medical condition that caused Lira to go into medical distress and fall into the water. This incident remains under investigation by the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with the Ionia County Medical Examiner.
Crews working and responding to this incident include Ionia County Central Dispatch, Berlin-Orange Fire, LIFE EMS, and Lehman Funeral Homes.
